The signing of the Students’ Loans (Access to Higher Education) (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2024, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been met with praise from the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu.

This new legislation aims to address the shortcomings of the previous Student Loan Act of 2023, which faced criticism for various governance issues.

One of the key criticisms of the previous act was its lack of clarity on loan purpose, eligibility criteria, application methods, repayment plans, and loan recovery.

These shortcomings hindered the effectiveness of the student loan program and limited its impact on expanding access to higher education for Nigerian youth.

The new amended act seeks to rectify these issues and provide a more sustainable approach to higher education and skill development.

In his statement, Deputy Speaker Kalu commended President Tinubu for taking decisive action in signing the new legislation.

He highlighted the National Assembly's commitment to expanding access to higher education and acknowledged the significant challenges faced by many young Nigerians in affording a university education. Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu emphasized the importance of education as a pathway to a brighter future and urged students and young people to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the new law.

It is essential for young Nigerians to recognize the value of education and the role it plays in personal and national development.

By pursuing higher education, individuals not only enhance their own prospects but also contribute to the overall progress of Nigerian society.

The new student loan program provides a valuable resource for those who may not have had the means to pursue a university education previously.

In conclusion, the signing of the Students’ Loans (Access to Higher Education) (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2024, represents a significant step forward in expanding access to higher education for Nigerian youth.

President Tinubu and the National Assembly should be commended for their efforts in addressing the shortcomings of the previous legislation and providing a more sustainable approach to student loans.

It is now up to students and young people to seize this opportunity and take advantage of the benefits that higher education can offer.
