Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, has suspended a Chinese course in the institution amid fears of a probable spread of the novel Coronavirus. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Charles Esomone, disclosed this during a pre-convocation press conference on Monday. He said the University had also asked its Chinese lecturers, who travelled for Christmas vacation, not to return to the University while those who were around had been barred from travelling. The VC said the Chinese course under Confucius Institute of the University would now be run online.

Corona virus| Nigerian tests positive in usa

A Nigerian man has tested positive for deadly Wuhan coronavirus in the United States of America. This was announced on Saturday night by the Mayor of District of Columbia (DC), Muriel Bowser, in a news conference. TOWN CRIER MAGAZINE learnt that the man whose name is yet to be ascertained, lives in Nigeria and is in his 50s, but had been staying with his family members in Washington recently. According to Bowser, he tested positive in Maryland, where he remains hospitalised. Officials said; “DC Health has been notified by the State of Maryland of an individual who stayed in DC before presenting himself to a Maryland hospital and then tested positive for COVID-19 by the State of Maryland. DC Health is conducting contact tracing of the patient and individuals of known contact. Snake kills man in umuahia

A middle aged man, Chidiebere Christopher Nwoke has lost his life after a dangerous snake bit him during bush clearing in Umuahia, the Abia State capital. The late Mr Nwoke is a native of Umueke Ekerifeze Umuajata Olokoro in Umuahia south local government area of Abia state. IGBO TOWN CRIER MAGAZINE gathered that this development has put the people of the community in a state of mourning as the young man was said to be full of life and hard working. Our correspondent gathered that late Nwoke had gone to farm alongside his younger brother when the tragic incident happened. He said Nwoke unknowingly inflicted a machete cut on a dangerous viper snake known as “AJUALA”. In an effort to gather the cleared bush with his hands, the snake bit him on his left hand which resulted to the swelling of the hand. However, he was rushed to an anti poison native doctor who gave him some herbal drugs to stabilize him. He later passed on and has since been deposited in the mortuary.

A family court sitting in Owerri, the Imo State capital has arraigned the state director of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mr. Ikenna Unegbu, for allegedly defiling a two- year old girl in his office. The Nation gathered that the incident happened on the 5th of February, 2020, in Unegbu’s office. The mother of the victim, Chinonye Obioma, who is also the complainant, had told the court that her daughter was defiled on Wednesday, 5th February 2020, by Unegbu when he took the child from her in the guise of consoling the girl after her mother scolded her for pouring water around the office. She said, “My daughter went into the office twice with biscuits and groundnuts, only to come out from the director’s office the third time crying.” The complainant went ahead to explain that she discovered the abnormal movement and posture of her baby after she urinated on their way home. “When I asked her what happened, she mentioned that Uncle Police (the suspect) removed her

The web of crisis surrounding the embattled National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, yesterday got more entangled as the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, warned the former labour leader against showing up at the party’s national secretariat or moving near any formal function of the party in an official capacity. The IGP had given Oshiomhole the stern warning in obeisance to an order of an Abuja High Court, which gave an interlocutory order restraining Oshiomhole from parading himself as the National Chairman of the party. Though the restricted National Chairman had obtained another order from a Federal High Court in Kano State, which restored him as the APC National Chairman, the party insisted on obeying the first court verdict, since the courts are of coordinate jurisdiction.
