The South East region of Nigeria has long suffered from the devastating effects of the civil war that ended over five decades ago.

The region has continued to struggle with issues such as infrastructural damage, ecological problems, and perceived marginalization.

However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon with the recent signing of the South East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill in law by president Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

This significant development was initiated by Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu, a member of the House of Representatives representing Bende Federal Constituency, Abia and the current Deputy Speaker of the house of reps.

On February 22, 2024, the Senate unanimously passed the bill, thus concurring with the earlier action taken by the House of Representatives. This remarkable feat brought hope and excitement to the people of the South East region.

Aside from sponsoring the SEDC Bill, Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu, he also took it further by urging and encouraging the president to sign the bill into law.

This move is aimed at promoting equity and balancing the geopolitical landscape of the country.

The commission, as proposed in the bill, will be responsible for managing the funds allocated from the federation account for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses, and other infrastructural damage resulting from the civil war.

This development is a long-awaited step towards healing and rebuilding the South East region.

In addition, the commission will also address ecological problems and other developmental challenges in the region.

This gesture will go a long way in addressing the concerns of the people and promoting sustainable development in the region.

The states in the South East - Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, and Ebonyi - will undoubtedly benefit immensely from the commission's interventions.

It is also important to note that Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu included all South East House of Representatives members in the document, highlighting his commitment to working collaboratively with all stakeholders for the economic growth and development of the region.

However, some politicians from the region have tried to take credit for the bill's sponsorship, spreading false information. It is vital for the public to acknowledge the true sponsor of the bill and not be misled by false claims.

Let me conclude by saying that the signing of the South East Development Commission Bill into law is a significant milestone for the region and a step towards achieving equity and development in Nigeria.

Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu's dedication and determination to see this bill through is commendable, and we can only hope that it will bring much-needed development and progress to the South East region.

Hon. Chijioke Chukwu, a former Minority Leader of Abia State House of Assembly, has weighed in on this matter.  He has expressed his support for the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who had earlier called on Governor Alex Otti to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).  According to Hon. Chukwu, RT hon Benjamin Kalu's position aligns with hon Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour's statement that the L

Captain Ndukwe's promotion is a significant milestone, not only for him but also for his hometown of Item in Bende Federal Constituency Abia state and the entire nation of Nigeria.  It is a proud moment for our country to see one of our own reach such a prestigious rank in the U.S. Navy.
