On Monday, July 1st, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Benjamin Okezie Kalu, was formally inaugurated as a member of the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) Parliament at the first Ordinary Session of the Sixth Parliament.

The ceremony, which took place at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, marked a significant milestone for Rt Hon Kalu as he embarked on his journey as a member of this esteemed regional body.

In his goodwill remarks, on behalf of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Ph.D., Rt Hon Kalu commended the ECOWAS Parliament for its immense contributions to the region.

He highlighted the Parliament’s role in strengthening representative democracy, promoting and defending human rights, upholding the rule of law, and promoting good governance in the sub-region.

Rt Hon Kalu also pointed out the challenges facing West Africa and the increased responsibility placed on the ECOWAS Parliament to address them.

These challenges include economic instability, security threats, and political unrest. However, he expressed confidence that with dedication, unity of purpose, and cooperation, these challenges can be overcome.

The National Assembly, represented by Rt Hon Kalu, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through legislative measures that will provide a robust framework for Nigeria’s foreign policy.

This includes strengthening diplomatic relations, promoting economic interests, enhancing security, and fostering regional and global peace.

As a member of the ECOWAS Parliament, Rt Hon Kalu brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the table. With his leadership and passion for the region’s development, we can expect to see him play a critical role in shaping the future of West Africa.

His inauguration is a testament to his dedication and commitment to serving the people of the sub-region.

The ECOWAS Parliament was established in 1975 to promote economic integration and cooperation among its member states.

It is made up of 115 members, including 15 from Nigeria, and is responsible for discussing and passing laws that promote regional integration and development.

With the addition of Rt Hon Kalu, the Parliament is equipped with another capable member who will undoubtedly contribute to its success.

Let me conclude by saying that the formal inauguration of Rt Hon Benjamin Okezie Kalu as a member of the ECOWAS Parliament is a proud moment for Nigeria and the sub-region.

As we continue to face challenges, we can take comfort in the fact that we have leaders like Rt Hon Kalu, who are dedicated to promoting unity, progress, and prosperity in West Africa.

With his exemplary leadership and the collective effort of all members, the ECOWAS Parliament will continue to make significant strides towards a better future for the region.
