Call for Accountability: Where Are the Projects, Abia?

As we step into November 2025, the people of Abia are left grappling with a pressing question: Where are the projects?
The state government recently boasted about its financial allocations, claiming to have spent ₦64 billion on research, ₦12.3 billion on motorcycles, ₦80.5 billion on smart schools, and ₦7.9 billion on a recreational facility.
Yet, as citizens traverse the landscape of Abia, they find little to substantiate these staggering figures.
The promised smart schools remain elusive, the outcomes of the purported research are nowhere to be found, and the recreational facilities seem to exist solely in the realm of bureaucratic paperwork.
This lack of tangible results raises serious concerns about the transparency and accountability of the current administration.
The people of Abia state deserve to see the fruits of their tax contributions and the government’s financial commitments.
Instead, they are met with a disheartening reality: projects that were supposed to uplift the community are either non-existent or poorly executed.
Adding to the disillusionment is the alarming trend of outsourcing government contracts to companies based outside the state, predominantly from Lagos.
This practice not only sidelines local talent but also raises questions about the integrity of the procurement process.
Abia boasts a wealth of skilled engineers, builders, and project managers who are more than capable of executing these projects.
Yet, when it comes to technical work, the government seems to prefer “importing” personnel from elsewhere, while local youths are enlisted as "Agbero's" enforcers for tax collection and regulatory measures, often donning uniforms and labeled as task force members.
This situation presents a disturbing irony: the very people who should be the architects of their community’s development are relegated to the role of "Agbero's" enforcers, while outsiders reap the benefits of government contracts.
It is a disservice to the citizens of Abia state, who deserve to see their own people empowered and engaged in the development of their state.
In light of these issues, it is imperative that we begin to ask the right questions and demand transparent answers from our leaders:
- Who are the contractors behind the supposed school rehabilitation projects?
- Which companies supplied the motorcycles and managed the recreational facilities?
- Where are the audit reports detailing the expenditures of these multi-billion-naira projects?
An administration that can declare over ₦200 billion in project spending within a single year, yet fails to deliver visible results, owes the people a clear and comprehensive explanation.
The citizens of Abia state are not merely passive observers; they are stakeholders who deserve to hold their government accountable.
Abia state deserves governance that is transparent, inclusive, and accountable.
The time for glossy reports and empty figures is over. The people are calling for clarity, not propaganda; for truth, not technicalities; and for accountability, because every kobo belongs to the people.
As we move forward, let us unite in our demand for a government that prioritizes the needs of its citizens and invests in the local talent that can drive meaningful change.
It is time for the people of Abia to reclaim their voice and ensure that their government serves them with integrity and purpose.
The future of Abia depends on it.
