Having said the United states of America has approved the use of chloroquine for the treatment of Coronavirus, the Food and Drug Administration, FDA, Thursday disagreed with President Donald Trump, noting that ‘chloroquine’ was never approved for use with Covid-19 patients. The Lagos State Commissioner of Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, says the Italian who brought coronavirus to Nigeria now tests negative. He said this at a press conference on Thursday, The PUNCH reports. According to him, the Italian will be tested one more time and will be released if he tests negative again. Coronavirus was first recorded in Nigeria on February 27 when the Italian businessman, who was on a visit to Lafarge Africa Plc, Ewekoro, Ogun State, was diagnosed with the disease and taken to Lagos State. The second coronavirus case was a Nigerian, who had contact with the Italian and was isolated in Ogun State. Although he tested positive twice, subsequent tests were negative.

The Federal Ministry of Education has ordered the immediate closure of tertiary institutions, secondary and primary schools nationwide over the fear of coronavirus in Nigeria and as part of the precaution measures to reduce the spread of the virus. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr Sonny Echono, confirmed this to News men.

Coronavirus: How Africa is faring Covid-19 not yet pandemic -- WHO chief In the past 24 hours, Africa has recorded 17 deaths from the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak, the World Health Organisation (WHO), Africa region has said. While Africa was among the last continent to report cases of the virus, cases are beginning to spread throughout the continent as 33 countries have reported at least a case of the disease. The UN health agency said so far, there has been 633 confirmed COVID-19 cases in 33 African countries leading to 17 deaths. Meanwhile in the past 24 hours, the Gambia, Mauritius and Zambia have announced first cases. Increasing cases Cases in Africa have remained low compared to other continents. Egypt still tops the chart of countries with the most cases in Africa with 210 cases. This is followed by South Africa with 116 and Algeria with 75 confirmed cases. As Nigeria records more cases of coronavirus, the Anambra state government has banned public gathering in the state until further notice, starting from Monday, March 23. The state government, under the leadership of Governor Willie Obiano in a statement released on Thursday, March 19, provided health advisory for various sectors in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The government advised traders who go to the markets to wash their hands frequently, with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and allow it to air dry. It also recommended the use of hand sanitizers handshaking, hugging and all other forms of contact salutation are strongly discouraged. “A distance of 6-feet should be maintained between customers and traders,” the government said. It also advised the leadership of the markets to buy an infrared thermometer to test any cases of their member or customer falling sick in the market. Appeal Court affirms Ifeanyi Ubah's election

The court of appeal in Abuja has affirmed Ifeanyi Ubah as the senator representing Anambra south senatorial district. Stephen Adah, the appellate court justice, held that the judgment of the lower court which sacked Ubah as senator is a nullity. Bello Kawu, judge of a federal capital territory (FCT) high court in Kubwa, had voided Ubah’s election on April 11, 2019 on the grounds that he presented a forged National Examination Council (NECO) certificate to INEC. After hearing the case afresh, the high court still affirmed its previous judgment on January 17, 2020, and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Ubah and to issue a fresh certificate to Obinna Uzoh, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the senator-elect of the district. But Ubah contended that he was not given fair hearing. Ubah through his counsel, Onyeachi Ikpeazu, argued that as of the time the judgment in suit No: FCT/HC/CV/30

As part of proactive safety measures arising from the global Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), the Enugu State Government has directed public and private primary and secondary schools in the state to conclude all activities in their various schools and shut down on or before Friday, March 27, 2020, IgbereTV reports. In a statement by the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, the state government further enjoined teachers and students to continue to observe the School Water Sanitization and Hygiene Programme (WASH) operative in the state as well as other standard personal hygiene protocol for prevention of COVID-19 infection.

The Lagos Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, has confirmed four new cases of the COVID-19 pandemic in Lagos, With this, there are now a total of 12 cases in the country. The Health Commissioner confirmed the new cases at a news briefing on Thursday. This comes barely one day after the Federal Ministry of Health confirmed five new cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19). The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, confirming the news at a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja, explained that out of the five new cases, three arrived from the United States while two came from the United Kingdom. “We are still collating information on the travellers; two out of the three from the US are Nigerian, a mother and a 6-week old baby which makes it the youngest COVID-19 patient we have. “The third is an American national, who crossed the land border to become the first COVID-19 case not arriving by air. Abia to pay compensation for airport land

Umuahia – Abia State government says plans are ongoing to commence payment of compensation to Land Donors in parts of Ikwuano and Isiala North Local government areas where the State proposes to build an International Airport. A suspected case of COVID-19 infection has been isolated in Enugu. Giving the update in a tweet, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, stated: “The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control is aware of the patient in Enugu, suspected to have COVID-19. “This is one of several alerts received daily at the National COVID-19 Emergency Operations Centre. “The patient is in isolation, sample collected and results expected tomorrow.”

Ihedioha blasts Hope Uzodinma

Imo State former Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has lambasted Governor Hope Uzodinma, over comments that he sacked workers. A statement by his spokesman, Aic Akwarandu, Friday night, called the governor a liar. Uzodinma had asked Head of Service, Camillus Chibuzor Nwagwu, to reinstate workers he said were sacked by the past administration. He approved the release of their appointment letters and instructed that they are remunerated as at when due. Reacting, Ihedioha stated that Uzodinma was engaging in propaganda and image-smearing campaign against him. The statement read: “We have read that Governor Emeka Ihedioha sacked 3,500 civil servants employed by Governor Rochas Okorocha. “Such claims are plain malicious and mischievous. “There was never a time Rt. The Senate is currently working on an amendment to the 1999 Constitution with a view to conferring indigeneship of a state on any resident that has consistently lived in that state for at least 10 years. The proposed law is titled, “A bill for an Act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to define who is an indigene of the state.” The bill, obtained by our correspondent on Friday, was sponsored by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege. The bill seeks to alter Section 31 of the Principal Act by inserting new subsections 2,3 and 4. The new provision states that someone could become an indigene of a state if he or she was born in that state, or if he or she had lived in the state for a continuous period of not less than 10 years.
