The induction of Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu and 34 other Nigerian lawmakers into the 6th Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament by President Bola Tinubu is a significant milestone for Nigeria and the entire West African region. 

This event marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation and collaboration among ECOWAS member states to address common challenges and promote regional integration.

The ECOWAS Parliament plays a crucial role in promoting democracy, good governance, and economic development in the region. 

As representatives of the people, the Nigerian lawmakers have a responsibility to advocate for the interests of their constituents and contribute to the legislative process at the regional level. 

By participating in the ECOWAS Parliament, they have the opportunity to engage with their counterparts from other member states, exchange ideas, and work together to address key issues facing West Africa.

The induction ceremony, presided over by President Tinubu, underscores Nigeria's commitment to the ECOWAS integration process and its role as a leading member state in the region. 

The presence of high-ranking officials and dignitaries at the event highlights the importance of the ECOWAS Parliament as a forum for dialogue and cooperation among West African countries.

As the newly inducted members of the ECOWAS Parliament, Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu and his colleagues have a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on the region. 

They have a platform to address key issues such as peace and security, trade and economic development, human rights, and environmental sustainability. 

By working together with their counterparts from other member states, they can contribute to the advancement of the ECOWAS agenda and the well-being of the people of West Africa.

ECOWAS Parliament comprises 115 members drawn from the 15-member State of which Nigeria is one.

Nigeria has been allotted out of this number, 35 slots (That is 17 Senators and 18 Honourable members), followed by Ghana which has eight seats. Côte d’Ivoire is allotted seven seats, while Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Senegal have six seats, respectively.

Let me conclude by saying the induction of the Nigerian lawmakers into the 6th Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament is a significant step towards regional integration and cooperation.
