Umuahia – Abia State government says plans are ongoing to commence payment of compensation to Land Donors in parts of Ikwuano and Isiala North Local government areas where the State proposes to build an International Airport. The State Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Urban Planning, Barrister Suleiman Ukandu who made the revelation when the traditional rulers from the affected Communities visited him in his office reminded them of the importance of the Airport Project, particularly in the areas of revenue generation, easing of doing business, employment, commerce, industry and transport. A suspected case of COVID-19 infection has been isolated in Enugu. Giving the update in a tweet, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, stated: “The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control is aware of the patient in Enugu, suspected to have COVID-19. “This is one of several alerts received daily at the National COVID-19 Emergency Operations Centre. “The patient is in isolation, sample collected and results expected tomorrow.”

Imo State former Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has lambasted Governor Hope Uzodinma, over comments that he sacked workers. A statement by his spokesman, Aic Akwarandu, Friday night, called the governor a liar. Uzodinma had asked Head of Service, Camillus Chibuzor Nwagwu, to reinstate workers he said were sacked by the past administration. He approved the release of their appointment letters and instructed that they are remunerated as at when due. Reacting, Ihedioha stated that Uzodinma was engaging in propaganda and image-smearing campaign against him. The Senate is currently working on an amendment to the 1999 Constitution with a view to conferring indigeneship of a state on any resident that has consistently lived in that state for at least 10 years. The proposed law is titled, “A bill for an Act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to define who is an indigene of the state.” The bill, obtained by our correspondent on Friday, was sponsored by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege. The bill seeks to alter Section 31 of the Principal Act by inserting new subsections 2,3 and 4. The new provision states that someone could become an indigene of a state if he or she was born in that state, or if he or she had lived in the state for a continuous period of not less than 10 years. Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, has suspended a Chinese course in the institution amid fears of a probable spread of the novel Coronavirus. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Charles Esomone, disclosed this during a pre-convocation press conference on Monday. He said the University had also asked its Chinese lecturers, who travelled for Christmas vacation, not to return to the University while those who were around had been barred from travelling. A Nigerian man has tested positive for deadly Wuhan coronavirus in the United States of America. This was announced on Saturday night by the Mayor of District of Columbia (DC), Muriel Bowser, in a news conference. TOWN CRIER MAGAZINE learnt that the man whose name is yet to be ascertained, lives in Nigeria and is in his 50s, but had been staying with his family members in Washington recently. According to Bowser, he tested positive in Maryland, where he remains hospitalised. Officials said; “DC Health has been notified by the State of Maryland of an individual who stayed in DC before presenting himself to a Maryland hospital and then tested positive for COVID-19 by the State of Maryland. DC Health is conducting contact tracing of the patient and individuals of known contact. A middle aged man, Chidiebere Christopher Nwoke has lost his life after a dangerous snake bit him during bush clearing in Umuahia, the Abia State capital. The late Mr Nwoke is a native of Umueke Ekerifeze Umuajata Olokoro in Umuahia south local government area of Abia state. IGBO TOWN CRIER MAGAZINE gathered that this development has put the people of the community in a state of mourning as the young man was said to be full of life and hard working. Our correspondent gathered that late Nwoke had gone to farm alongside his younger brother when the tragic incident happened. He said Nwoke unknowingly inflicted a machete cut on a dangerous viper snake known as “AJUALA”. In an effort to gather the cleared bush with his hands, the snake bit him on his left hand which resulted to the swelling of the hand. However, he was rushed to an anti poison native doctor who gave him some herbal drugs to stabilize him. He later passed on and has since been deposited in the mortuary.

A family court sitting in Owerri, the Imo State capital has arraigned the state director of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mr. Ikenna Unegbu, for allegedly defiling a two- year old girl in his office. The mother of the victim, Chinonye Obioma, who is also the complainant, had told the court that her daughter was defiled on Wednesday, 5th February 2020, by Unegbu when he took the child from her in the guise of consoling the girl after her mother scolded her for pouring water around the office.
