The Legislative Evening on Women’s Political Representation showcased the vital need for inclusive governance in Nigeria, highlighted by the speech of Deputy Speaker Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu.

His presentation focused on the Special Seats Bill (HB1349), which he emphasized is not merely a symbolic gesture but a strategic measure addressing a significant national issue.

The exclusion of women from political leadership roles has far-reaching consequences, ultimately costing the nation in terms of untapped potential, innovation, and economic opportunities.

Studies indicate that increasing women's participation in leadership positions could yield substantial economic benefits for Nigeria.

A report suggests that with enhanced participation, Nigeria may see a remarkable GDP growth of up to 9% by 2025.

This statistic underscores the connection between women's representation and economic development, demonstrating that diverse leadership can lead to more comprehensive decision-making, driving progress and innovation.

The role of Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu as Chairman of the House Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution is pivotal in this context.

His commitment to championing constitutional reforms that mirror the principles of equity and inclusion is commendable.

By advocating for amendments that support women’s political representation, he aligns governance with contemporary societal values and the pressing need for gender parity in leadership.

Engagement from various sectors of society is crucial at this juncture.

Policymakers, political leaders, civil society organizations, and the general electorate all play a significant role in pushing for this constitutional amendment.

It is essential for all Nigerians to actively participate in the ongoing zonal and national public hearings.

Such involvement not only raises awareness regarding the importance of women's representation but also contributes to a collective effort to enact meaningful change in governance.

Let me conclude by saying that achieving a more inclusive political landscape in Nigeria is not just a matter of rights but a strategic necessity that can propel the nation towards greater economic success and societal development.

The efforts to support the Special Seats Bill mark a significant step in the right direction.

By working together, Nigerians can help lay the groundwork for a future where everyone’s voice matters, fostering a society that embraces diversity and innovation.

This concerted effort is vital for building a prosperous Nigeria, where no one is left behind.
